Current Software Technologies

February 15, 2018

There are many software's online that anyone can use to develop their own games. Although each one can only do so much they still contribute to the development. An example of both 3D and 2D application is Unity, arguably the most popular game development software. By signing up for Unity you have access to online tutorials, codes and assets. The software allows you user to download any assets for their chosen game weather in 2D or 3D  you have the option to switch instantly. Its perfect for game developers as its not very limited, unlike some software it may only help you in certain areas. Whereas, unity allows you to build your level using any asset you import and from there on you can add scripts to code whatever you want. Additionally no matter where you are into development it has the feature of letting you play the game to test it out. Once you've finished you can even render out your game as it comes with a real time rendering engine.

Adding on, another example of a application software is Maya. A 3D computer application used for modelling and animations. How can this be used to develop games? easy, its main feature is 3D modelling, unlike in Unity you may not find a specific asset you want. However, you can make it in Maya by using online tutorials to show you the basics its easy to learn. Not only can you model but you can also add textures to whatever you decide to make. By using bump mapping to add depth and give it a more 3D look along with its extra fluid effects and other special features such as fur, hair and cloth its not hard to get a detailed and high quality model. However, compared to unity which basically has it all you cannot make a game in this software but it can help you with the development of assets.

Carrying on, a 2D software used to develop games is GameMaker Studio 2, although much similar to unity in which you can make an entire game it only features 2D games, its most notable game ever made using it is Undertale (so you know its good.)  Unlike Unity its script is open-ended and its creators have said its very easy to use. Another difference is that you can make your own 2D assets in the software as well and revolves around drag and drop features.

Lastly a quick software which I believe to be a 2D application software is Photoshop. Although not entirely obvious as to how it can help develop a game it can contribute to the art. If it be concept sketches, backgrounds or even character design its all still helping and 2D. You can make the sprites for a 2D game on their as well if your not using GameMaker and instead using Unity. Although a downside much like GameMaker is that you have to pay for it but you do get a free trial run, not that its very long.
